Helium Safety – Meet Faraday. Helium is perfectly safe in balloons and safe when balloons are deflated in open and well-ventilated areas but, inhaling it from balloons can be dangerous. Helium displaces oxygen in your lungs when you inhale it, which can cause suffocation and you won’t even realize it.
Is helium bad for your voice?
But contrary to popular belief, the switch from air to helium gas doesn’t actually increase the pitch of your voice (at least not very much). Instead, it affects a much more mysterious property of the sound, called “timbre.” Rather than chirping high notes like Tweety Bird, you start quacking words like Donald Duck.
What helium does to the body?
Breathing in pure helium deprives the body of oxygen, as if you were holding your breath. If you couldn’t breathe at all, you’d start to die in minutes—as soon as your body exhausted the supply of oxygen stored in the blood. But helium speeds up this process.
Does helium leave the body?
Helium gas is odourless, tasteless and non-toxic- it’s not poisonous if you breathe it. Helium is lighter than air which is why balloons float and your squeeky helium voice goes back to normal- it floats up and out of your lungs all by itself.
Why does helium make you talk weird?
Helium is lighter than air. Which means sound moves faster through helium than through air – nearly 3 times faster, in fact. So the sound waves bounce around faster in your vocal tract, which amplifies the higher frequencies in your voice. It’s sort of like how speeding up your voice makes it sound higher.
Can helium make you dizzy?
Typically, when you inhale helium from a balloon, besides the change in voice, you may also experience slight dizziness. Then, there are other potential side effects also, like nausea and fainting spell. But, a helium balloon is unlikely to cause major health issues.

Try speaking through your mouth, rather than your nose. It’s possible to get a deep nasal voice, but it sounds more masculine if you speak through your mouth. To deepen your voice, you’ll want to try and lower your pitch. To do this, relax your throat as much as possible, to avoid tightening your vocal cords.
What gas makes your voice deep?
If you breath in helium (six times lighter than the air we breath), the pitch of your voice goes up. However, if you breath sulfur hexafluoride (six time heavier than normal air), your voice sounds low.
Can you breathe pure hydrogen?
Re: Is it safe to inhale hydrogen gas? Hydrogen can be an asphyxiant by displacing the oxygen in the air. However, for the volume of hydrogen needed to do that in a normal sized room, the bigger issue would be explosion risks. For a MRE, the amount of hydrogen produced is very small and will quickly dissipate.
Is helium a carcinogen?
CARCINOGENIC POTENTIAL: Helium is not listed as a carcinogen or potential carcinogen by NTP, IARC, or OSHA Subpart Z. The practice of intentionally inhaling helium for a voice altering effect is extremely dangerous and may result in serious injury or death!
What do you do if you inhale helium?
If you take more than a couple of breaths of helium gas, you could pass out, but unless you hit your head when you fall, you’re unlikely to suffer any lasting harm. You might get a headache and a dry nasal passage. Helium is non-toxic and you’ll start breathing normal air as soon as you move away from the balloon.
How much helium is used in balloons?
This is equivalent to about 105944 cubic feet. A 12 inch latex balloon uses about 0.5 cubic feet so this is equivalent to about 211888 balloons worth of helium.
